The war on drugs is one that has lasted for many years. Lately, Fentanyl has been a big problem in America killing a large number of American citizens. The CDC reported 73,000 total drug overdose deaths from May 2024-April 2025 . So the Trump administration has decided to get to the heart of the problem. Recently they have decided to strike boats carrying these drugs. Many conservatives are happy that something is finally being done to stop the epidemic. Trump said during his announcement I believe on October 16th 2025 when asked why instead destroying these ships why they wouldn't just arrest the people on these boats. He said , said they have been doing it that way for 30 plus years and that way was not working. So , he said we needed to try something new. That the boats are usually too fast. Not only are strikes occurring in the water, there are talks about possible land strikes. I woke up this morning and read that planes are being sent to certain parts of Venezuela now to try and stop the distribution of drugs to America.
My thoughts on this. Yes, we definitely need to find a productive way to stop drugs from entering our country. Imagine how much more productive our country would be without these drugs coming in. Many families are torn apart by these drugs. Children watch their parents struggling with addiction, unable to take care of them because all they care about is their next high. Both old and young people overdose and pass away too soon because of these drugs. Our country would be much stronger if we could kill the supply of drugs entering our country. Yet, if what they have been doing in the past isn't working I don't feel bombing the boats is the best solution. I feel our solution is somewhere in the middle of hardly doing anything and bombing the boats. We need to disable the boats to catch the people trying to distribute the drugs. Still, I do get that the fear of being killed may hinder those who plan on bringing drugs to our country.
On the topic of planes being sent to Venezuela. It is a way to send a message but we need to be careful not to start a war with them. Our president needs to be on the same page as the leader of Venezuela. They need to sit down and have a conversation about things that need to happen on their land to stop drugs from making it to our country. Just sending our planes might start a war. Yes, we want the drugs not to come into the United States, but we don't want a war.
Going through social media I have found several responses to the situation. Amongst the jokes about high fish there were celebrations from conservatives and concerns from democrats. Conservatives were making the point that people would be too afraid to risk their lives to smuggle drugs into the United States. Democrats that commented on these post were concerned for the ocean life. They also wanted to know how we could be sure there were really drugs on the boats and innocent people were not killed. I actually feel that those are good concerns. I want drugs off the streets, but I also want to make sure we are not killing innocent people. There has been one report from a family. According to several news sources that one of these strikes killed a fisherman and not someone smuggling drugs. I also agree with the idea that these drugs entering our oceans will hurt the sea life.
We do need to be proactive in taking down those smuggling drugs into our country....but at what cost?
